Mowing in wet months

From June to December the grass can need cutting every week rather than every two. Raise the cutting height a notch so the lawn is not scalped, mow only when the surface has dried, and never remove more than a third of the blade in one cut. Clean the mower deck after each use so wet clippings do not clump and rust it.

Drainage, fungus and weeds

Standing water for more than a day after rain means compacted soil or a low spot; aeration and topdressing fix most cases. Brown patches with a dark ring, or a grey fuzz in the morning, are fungal and spread in humidity, so keep the lawn cut and clear of clippings. Weeds germinate fast in wet soil, so hand-pull or spot-treat early rather than letting them seed.

Feeding

Heavy rain washes fertiliser through the soil. Use a slow-release product, apply after rain rather than before it, and split the dose over the season.
