How to Water Your Lawn More Efficiently

Efficient watering supports the lawn while reducing avoidable waste.

Water for the conditions

Weather, soil and grass type affect the amount needed.

Check coverage

Uneven irrigation can create dry and waterlogged areas.

Avoid automatic overwatering

Pause or adjust the schedule during significant rainfall.

When to ask for help

If the work, equipment or condition is beyond routine maintenance, request professional guidance before proceeding.

How much and when

Most lawns need about 25 millimetres of water a week including rain, applied in one or two deep soakings rather than a daily sprinkle. Water early in the morning so the grass dries before evening and fungus has less chance to take hold. In the dry season, January to May, that usually means two long waterings a week; in the rainy season, often none.

Check what you are actually applying

Put a few empty tins across the lawn, run the sprinkler for twenty minutes, and measure the depth in each. This shows both how long a full watering takes and where coverage is uneven. Move or adjust heads until the tins are roughly equal.

Save water without losing the lawn

  • Mow higher so the soil is shaded and holds moisture
  • Leave clippings on the lawn as a light mulch
  • Fix leaks and dripping hose connections
  • Use a timer and a rain sensor if you have irrigation
