A weekly rainy-season checklist

• Cut when the grass is dry, at a higher setting, removing no more than a third of the blade
• Clear clippings and leaves so the lawn can breathe
• Walk the lawn after heavy rain and note where water sits
• Check for fungal patches, fire-ant mounds and fast-spreading weeds

Drainage fixes

Low spots can be topdressed with a sand and soil mix a little at a time. Compacted paths benefit from aeration. Where water runs off a hard surface onto the lawn, a shallow gravel channel or a planted border slows it down.

When to call for help

If the lawn stays waterlogged for days, or fungus keeps returning, the problem is usually below the surface. A lawn-care visit can assess the soil, aerate and set a mowing and feeding schedule for the rest of the season.
